Our Garden Is The Face Of The House

By: Ben Needles

I bought this old house one year ago. Ive been renovating ever since. Ive been using a lot of Jerusalem stone because of its beauty, its long-lasting qualities and also for sentimental reasons. It reminds me of home.

The interior of the house is pretty well completed now with Jerusalem stone counters in the kitchen, tiles from the front lobby right through and into the kitchen, and tiles in all three bathrooms. Jerusalem stone comes in many different colors; all from different regions in Israel. So far Ive used gold, red, white and gray. Even the fireplace in the living room is made of white and gold Jerusalem stone. Im very pleased with how it looks!

Now Im ready to move to the outside. I want my little piece of Jerusalem in the States to encompass both the inside and outside of my home. My garden wall, which separates my yard from my neighbors, needs redesign. The cement structure itself is solid, not leaning. It must have been re-done at some point or maybe the wall isnt as old as the house Im not sure. Either way, its fine but the surface is crumbling in spots and its an ugly gray.

What I plan on doing is refacing it with gold Jerusalem stone tiles. I remember how in the evening sun Jerusalem would glow with a golden light as if illuminated from within hence the term The Golden City. This was the gold Jerusalem stone.

The Jerusalem stone tiles are sitting in piles waiting. Everything is ready for the workers to arrive and begin the work. I glance at my watch. Nine clock already where can they be? I was expecting them here by eight.

Nine-thirty and still no workers! By ten Im frantic, and a little peeved. Its so hard to get good workers these days. With all the unemployment around youd think theyd be glad of the work and want to please the person thats paying them, wouldnt you? If they did a good job, I was intending to hire them back when Im ready to put the patio and gardens in.

By ten-thirty Id had enough. I was beginning to wear a path down in the grass from all the pacing I was doing. I went back inside and started searching for the foremans cell phone number. I knew it had to be here somewhere

Eleven oclock the foreman called. We dont want to finish your project, he said in a distant voice. I vaguely wondered why his voice sounded so weird. Mr. Horowitz .do you hear me? Mr. Horowitz can you hear me? Why is he calling my name?
Something was shaking me. Mr. Horowitz, said the same voice again.
Suddenly, I woke up with a start on my living room sofa. I looked at my watch eight AM! I was the one who slept in

Guess Ive been at this reno thing too long. Awake or asleep, it didnt seem to matter it had become an obsession.
