Electrical Cookers Versus Gas Cookers

By: Theodore Cartman

Man has come a long way since the 1st century when fire was the predominant way of cooking and warming himself. It wasn't long before man discovered that he could not do without fire. Fire was important to first of all cook the meat from the animals that had been hunted. Then fire was also essential for warmth because there were no structures build at that time that could provide adequate warmth from the harsh winters. Fire also acted as a protective measure because wild animals could not approach a dwelling where fire was burning. Today man has harnessed fire especially for cooking and has produced cookers that can cook and bake at extremely fast speeds.

There are predominantly two major cookers that one can encounter when they enter into a home or an apartment. These are electric cookers and gas cookers. Gas cookers are more prevalent in homes while electric cookers can be found in many apartment homes and town homes. These two are popular and very safe and that is why they account for over 90% of the market share when it comes to cookers.

Gas cookers are usually the preferred when it comes to professional cooking. Most renowned chefs prefer gas because one is able to adjust the flame much more precisely than with gas. With gas cookers, there is an oven that is attached to the wall. It is attached to the gas pipes that are secured under the kitchen and which travel outside to the main gas conduit. The gas is administered by a gas company in much the same way that electricity is administered by the electric company. The home owner then receives a bill every month because gas is considered a utility. Gas is very safe and the flame can be lit either with a match stick or a lighter. One disadvantage with gas is that as a utility, it represents a separate bill. With the electric cooker, there is no additional cost to operate the unit other than the regular cost of electricity that the entire house or apartment consumes. Gas can also be dangerous. In the past, gas was odorless and this means that if there was a leak, the home owner could not tell and this ended up causing a lot of fire damage and even death.

Electric cookers are easy to operate. The oven consists mostly of four coils that are electrically-heated. Then there are knob-like buttons that one uses to turn the cooker on. There are no additional costs other than the overall electric bill. There is no manual because the electric cooker is very easy to operate. One drawback with electric cookers is that when the coil is hot, there may be no way of telling and if there are little children in the home, they may end up touching the coil.

Electric cookers can be found in any large retail department store especially those that deal with electronics. But in most cases, this is not necessary because the cookers already come attached to the home when you move in.
